Dylan mooney

Dylan Mooney is a Yuwi man from Mackay, central Queensland, Torres Strait Islander from Erub Island and South Sea Islander. He has completed a bachelor of contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at the Queensland College of Art.

Mooney’s practice includes digital illustrations, drawing and print- making and street art – inspired by history, culture, family history and community stories

Mooney uses his art practice to share his stories of what it is like to be indigenous person in modern Australia, with his various mediums he captures the struggles and hardships First Nations peoples have gone through but tells a story of resilience and survival and how far Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander peoples and South Sea Islander peoples have come.

“The river is more than a body of water; it is a place of connection, movement and gathering. The repeating forms within the work reflect the continuous flow of the river and the interconnectedness of the communities that surround it. Native plants, animals and footprint weave together throughout the pattern, representing the many lives and stories that exist alongside the river.

The colours and mirrored forms create a sense of energy, movement and celebration. Like the river itself, the pattern is constantly moving and returning, suggesting that our connections are ongoing and continually renewed.

At its heart, the work is about community — the relationships we build, the people who surround us, and the love, care and belonging we share with one another. It celebrates the Maiwar as a place where these connections meet, grow and flow together.”
